The Elephant Man (1980)
Bowie's critically acclaimed portrayal of Victorian celebrity freak Joseph Merrick in Bernard Pomerance's play The Elephant Man. Bowie appeared as Merrick from July 1980 to January 1981, beginning at the Denver Center For Performing Arts and moving on to the Blackstone Theater in Chicago before finishing at the Booth Theater on Broadway. Seen here with co-stars Patricia Elliott as Mrs Kendal and Donal Donnelly as surgeon Frederick Treves. The play was directed by Jack Hofsiss.
