Live Aid: the "global jukebox" benefit concert put together by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure across two continents. A plethora of superstars performed to raise funds for famine relief in Africa.
Forty years ago tonight, 13th July 1985...
Bowie's set at Wembley Stadium began at 7:20pm with TVC15 and continued with Rebel Rebel, Modern Love and "Heroes". He had planned to perform Five Years but dropped it in order to allow footage of children starving in Ethiopia to be screened.
Alongside Alison Moyet, Pete Townshend and Bob Geldof Bowie sang backing vocals for Paul McCartney's performance of Let It Be and the opening lines of the final song of the evening, Do They Know It's Christmas? with Bob Geldof and the "Band Aid choir".
I wasn't there myself, unfortunately (tickets were like gold dust and cost a whopping twenty-five quid!) but I watched it all on TV whilst getting slowly drunk.
Sax: Claire Hurst. Backing vocals: Tessa Niles and Helena Springs. Keyboards: Thomas Dolby. Guitar: Kevin Armstrong. Drums: Neil Conti. Bass: Matthew Seligman. Percussion: Pedro Ortiz. Hair by Jim Hutton (Mrs Mercury).
In the finale, see if you can spot: Bob Geldof, Bono, George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley, Adam Ant, Rick Parfitt, Freddie Mercury, Howard Jones, Paul and Linda McCartney, Midge Ure, Paul Young and Sting.
